Privacy Law Skills
  •  "How can I keep up with privacy law while balancing school, internships, moot court, and other responsibilities?"

Professor Sand suggested that there is no need to "get into the weeds" -- a working general knowledge of the things going on in the privacy world is sufficient. He also suggested signing up for the IAPP daily email updates.

  • RJ Pal and Laura Patty suggested checking out TrustArc's client advisories for up-to-date privacy laws and news. IAPP also holds IAPP Knowledge Nets, which are useful for students looking to gain new privacy law-related knowledge.

  • Know the large over-reaching differences between US privacy law and European privacy law (GDPR).

  • Consider getting certified!

Nishma Patel also suggested getting together with a practitioner or professor to write a law review note or even a white paper (which you can self publish on your LinkedIn page!)

The Hustle
  • Find a mentor! There are multiple mentor-mentee programs offered through various local bar associations: San Francisco Bar Association, San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, Marin County Bar Association, and more! Also, consider reaching out to local practitioners for a mentee-mentor relationship.

  • Work with updating your LinkedIn. Recruiters often look for specific key terms -- do you have them on your page?

  • When searching for privacy law jobs, broaden your key terms. Don't just search for "privacy" or "privacy law". Consider terms such as "GDPR," "privacy associate", "privacy compliance," etc.

  • When is the last time you updated your resume? Does it show interest in privacy law?

All four panelists suggested working on your soft skills as well: e-mails, communicating, presenting yourself . . .
